How to Tree Planting Guide in South Africa

Soil to use. Because most of the soil in the Cape flats is really just sand Trees4Schools ensures that a large amount of compost is donated at each planting. To plant a 1,8 m (20 kg) tree in sand it is important to do the following:

  • Dig a whole 600mm x 600mm x 600mm
  • The first 200 x 200 x 200 of soil pace on one side of the hole and the rest put on the other side of the hole
  • Put one wheel barrow of compost into the hole and mix
  • One wheel barrow of compost onto the the second pile of soil and mix
  • Plant the tree and continue to add in a mix of soil and sand
  • Finish by placing a layer of compost around the tree – ensure the compost is not too close to the trunk, as this will burn
